What Parts A & B Cover

Coverage depends on the service, setting, and Medicare rules. These examples can help you understand the difference.

Inpatient hospital care

Part A may help cover inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and limited home health services.

Doctor visits

Part B may help cover medically necessary doctor visits and many outpatient services.

Preventive services

Part B covers many preventive services, such as screenings and wellness visits, when eligibility requirements are met.

Outpatient care

Part B may help cover lab tests, durable medical equipment, ambulance services, and outpatient procedures.

Know Before You Enroll

Costs and Enrollment

Your costs and enrollment choices can vary based on your work history, income, other coverage, and when you become eligible.

Premiums and deductibles

Many people pay no premium for Part A, while Part B generally has a monthly premium. Deductibles and cost sharing may also apply.

Initial Enrollment Period

Your first opportunity to enroll is tied to your 65th birthday or qualifying disability. Missing it can lead to delays or penalties.

Working past 65

Employer coverage may affect when you should enroll. Review your situation before making a decision.
