The Basics

Coverage You Can Build On

Original Medicare is the traditional, fee-for-service Medicare program. It includes Part A for hospital insurance and Part B for medical insurance.

You can generally see any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare anywhere in the United States. Original Medicare does not usually include routine dental, vision, hearing, or prescription drug coverage.

How Original Medicare Works

Understanding the two parts can help you see what is covered and where you may want additional protection.

Part A

Helps cover inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health services.

Part B

Helps cover doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, medical equipment, and more.

Your Choice of Providers

In most cases, you can use any provider that accepts Medicare without needing referrals.

Your Share of Costs

You may pay deductibles, coinsurance, and premiums, depending on the service and your situation.

Plan Ahead

Consider the Gaps

Prescription Drugs

Original Medicare does not include most outpatient prescription drugs. A standalone Part D plan may help with this coverage.

Out-of-Pocket Costs

There is no annual out-of-pocket maximum with Original Medicare alone, so costs can add up if you need frequent care.

Supplemental Coverage

Some people choose a Medigap policy to help pay certain deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments.
